If you’re a kitesurfing enthusiast in search of your next adventure, look no further than Sal, Cape Verde. With steady winds, stunning beaches, and a lively local culture, this island provides an unforgettable kitesurfing experience for intermediate and advanced riders. This guide covers everything you need to know about kitesurfing in Sal, from weather conditions and top spots to accommodation and dining. So gear up and let’s dive right in!
Weather Conditions for Kitesurfing
Understanding the weather before your kitesurfing trip to Sal is essential. The best time to kitesurf is from December to May. During these months, wind speeds range from a consistent 15 to 30 knots. This makes for plenty of perfect days on the water.
Average temperatures are comfortable, typically between 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F), providing a perfect setting for riding and beach lounging. Do note that while it's mostly sunny, the wind is strong so it makes sense to bring light windproof gear and eye protection, especially during calima local desert wind blowing sand from Sahara.
Mitu & Djo Kitesurfing Spot
One of the highlights of kitesurfing in Sal is the famous Mitu & Djo kitesurfing spot, where you can meet both Mitu and Djo as they oftern hang out at the spot. Located North East of Santa Maria, this area features breathtaking turquoise waters and sandy beaches that make for a great kitesurfing environment.

The Mitu & Djo kite spot is ideal for strong intermediate and advanced riders. Beginners may find it difficult due to the challenging shore break, which can impede their progress. However, lessons and rentals are easily accessible, so if you're up for these intense conditions, feel free to try it out. Locals often say that if you learn to kite here, you can ride anywhere, which is likely true, but it will take you twice as long to learn and will be a more challenging experience. Strong intermediates and advanced riders will enjoy the reliable, strong winds and waves for directional riders. The Mitu school also provides gear storage, a chillout/surf shop area, a toilet, and an excellent on-site restaurant offering a great selection of hot and cold dishes, salads, pizzas, and beverages. There are no showers, and water is scarce, so there's only a small amount of water to rinse your gear. The staff may not always be present, so don't expect assistance with launching or landing from the beach boys. However, there are plenty of other kiters around, and everyone helps each other out. You may also sign up for a clinic with Mitu himself to improve your directional skills and wave riding.
Accommodation Options
Choosing the right accommodation is vital for a successful kitesurfing trip to Sal. Fortunately, there are lodging options that cater to every budget.
For those seeking luxury, the Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort offers stunning ocean views, an infinity pool, and direct beach access. Guests often praise the quality of service and the relaxing atmosphere, making their stay memorable.
If you prefer more budget-friendly options, consider local guesthouses, which provide comfortable settings without the hefty price tag. Many of these accommodations even offer kitesurfing packages, making it easy to arrange transport to the spot lessons and gear rental during your stay.
From beachfront villas to cozy bed and breakfasts, you’ll find plenty of choices. Remember to book in advance, particularly during the busy kitesurfing season.
Important to mention is that the main spot Mitu & Djo is not in Santa Maria and requires daily transfers to and from accommodation. There are however, other spots in Santa Maria like Duotone centre, but they are offshore and mainly attract wingfoilers, but there are some kiters too.
Places to Eat
After an exciting day of kitesurfing, refueling is essential. Sal features a variety of dining spots that celebrate local and international flavors.
There are many great, high quality, more expensive restaurants in the main street of Santa Maria closest to the southern coast of the beach. Just a couple streets back into the island you will find the most authentic local cuisine at the fraction of the prize but remember to bring the cash as not all places take credit cards.
For best authentic Cape Verdean cuisine, visit Art Kafe, which is renowned for its grilled fish and laid-back atmosphere. This spot is perfect for enjoying a meal with friends and experiencing local dishes.
If you're in the mood for seafood, Bon Petisck offers a wide array of options, including grilled octopus, which in my view is not to be missed. This restaurant is popular among both tourists and locals, so make sure you book or arrive early.
